In the early 1980s, Marshall tube amps sold in the USA were equipped with 6550s instead of EL34s. These amps can accept either type of tube. This was a common modification done to various models in the 1980s and 1990s. Some hard-rock guitarists prefer the sound of 6550s (they break up at much higher volumes than EL34s).

The 1980s ushered in the age of plenty for Marshalls in the USA. 1981 marked the end of the Marshall and Rose Morris distribution contract. Rose Morris tacked on a heavy fee for export rights, making the Marshall amp cost a lot of frogskins (more than a few quid), for players outside the UK.
The JCM800 series is a line of guitar amplifiers made by Marshall Amplification. The series was introduced in 1981. Although models 1959 and 1987 had been in production since 1965 and the 2203 and 2204 had been in production since 1975, they were redesigned and introduced as JCM800 amplifiers in '81.
